The Way I Work

It’s indisputable that oil paints have a depth and lustre difficult to achieve with other mediums. I favour Acrylics, principally because they are eco friendly and have the major advantage of drying quickly. Having done much research, worked through trial and error, I now use an assortment of pastes, mediums and varnishes which comes close to an “oil” result but with the added bonus of a unique fluidity and resonance.

I rarely draw these days, I flex up by sketching imaginatively with a brush on mini panels. To begin a landscape I use a 4” brush toning the surface unevenly with red oxide or burnt sienna. The gestalt kicks in at this stage where images emerge in my minds eye suggested by irregular shapes on the toned canvas and the journey begins.
